Painting en plein air on the Clarence

Australian oil painter Stacey Conridge blends classical craftsmanship with a contemporary appreciation for light, nature and human presence. Whether working from the figure, a still life or the landscape en plein air, Stacey approaches each piece as an immersive journey – an opportunity to explore and elevate the everyday through the richness of oil paint.

Stacey’s training follows the tradition of an early European studio apprenticeship. For more than twenty years she studied under respected Australian artist John Beeman, gaining a deep foundation in the techniques of masters such as Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Vermeer. She continues to honour these methods by preparing her own rabbit-skin-glue gesso panels and using only high-quality pigments, achieving the subtle luminosity and tonal depth characteristic of her work.

From direct painting to the more expressive forms of art, oil painting provides me with a luxurious vehicle to explore, express and experience my life and environment.

Based on Woodford Island on the Clarence River in New South Wales, Stacey draws inspiration from the bushland she shares with her husband, David, and from the native garden they nurture to support local wildlife. This connection to place is reflected in her landscapes and her sensitive depictions of birds and animals.

Stacey has exhibited across Queensland and New South Wales and has been recognised through multiple art awards and portrait prize selections. Critics consistently praise her refined Renaissance-influenced technique and the quiet emotional resonance of her paintings.
